Epic's spectacular Unreal Engine 3 tech demo free at iTunes App Store

Did you oooh and ahh at the fantastic gaming graphics that accompanied today's Apple keynote? You won't have to wait for next week's iOS 4.1 to get a taste of those textures for yourself. Though the full-on gladiator dueling of Epic's "Project Sword" may be a while off, you can get your hot little hands on "Epic Citadel" right now, a 82.2 megabyte download that explores a beautiful medieval castle town. Oh, and did we mention it's free? Even id Software's mindblowing 60FPS Rage demo must be quaking in its boots right about now.

Apple iOS overtakes Linux for online share

Apple's iOS platform has managed to pass a major desktop OS for the first time in web use as it now has more share than Linux, Net Applications found today. It just took the lead in July but held and widened it in August, with iPads, iPhones and iPods taking 1.13 percent; Linux has declined to a new low at just 0.85 percent. The figure doesn't include Android, though it has far lower share at just 0.2 percent....

iOS 4.2 to bring AirPlay, printing, iPad compatibility

Although iOS 4.1 is only set to launch next week, Apple also used today's press event to preview iOS 4.2. Critically the update will be the first version of iOS 4 to work on iPads, bringing along many advancements already on the iPhone and iPod touch, such as folders and multitasking. Universally the firmware will gain still more features, including wireless printing, which pops up a Print Center app in the Dock when a job is active. Multiple printers can be chosen from....

iPod touch (2010) first hands-on!

So we just got our hands on the new iPod touch... and boy is it small. As you would expect, the functionality of the device is identical to the iPhone 4, as well as the functions of the front and back cameras. In essence, it's a much thinner iPhone 4, with no cell radio, of course. The design is relatively in keeping with previous touches, so no major surprises there, but the inclusion of that A4 chip, higher resolution screen, and front and back cameras makes it a far more versatile device. Take a look at the gallery below if you're wondering just how much of a sliver this is -- it makes the iPhone 4 look... fat.

Apple's AirPlay music streaming coming to third party speaker docks, receivers, and stereos

Steve didn't mention it during his keynote just now, but in addition to bringing AirPlay music streaming to iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10, Apple's also opening the tech up to third parties, with a few big names already on board. That means you'll be able to stream music from iTunes, your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to speaker docks, receivers and stereos from companies like Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, JBL and iHome, complete with song, album, and artist info and album art. That certainly makes the system much more flexible, especially since you can stream to multiple speakers at once -- and damn, building a mix-and-match whole-house audio system just got incredibly easy. We're definitely digging for more info on this and some release dates for compatible gear, we'll let you know.

[Thanks, Iain]

Steve Jobs - Apple - IPhone - IPod - Smartphones

Sometime in June, Apple passed the 100 million marker in iOS devices sold, and now Steve Jobs has announced 120 million devices sold. To put that in perspective, Apple sold just over eight million iPhones in all of last quarter.

Apple Announces New iPods, iTunes 10, Social Network, AppleTV

Steve Jobs gave his iPod keynote this morning. He started with iOS 4.1 and Game Center which will be coming out next week. iOS 4.2 will add printing to the iPad and will be out in November. New iPod Shuffle has buttons again, and costs $49. The new iPod Nano is has a tiny multi touch screen, an FM Radio and starts at $149. The new (thinner) Touch has the iPhone 4 screen, the A4, and FaceTime over WiFi starting at $229 for 8gb. They all ship next week. iTunes 10 looks the same, but adds a social network called "Ping" which basically looks like Last.fm integrated and should be out today. AppleTV is updating: 1/4th the size, no purchases- only rentals. 99 cents for TV rentals (ABC & Fox), Netflix on Demand built in, and for $99.

Apple introduces new iPod line

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced a revamped iPod line and updates to the operating system for the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad at Apple's highly anticipated product launch event on Wednesday.

During their event today in San Francisco, Apple announced iTunes 10, the latest version of their music software. But they also introduced a big new feature in the app -- Ping: a social network for music. It's like "Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes," Jobs says. "But it's not Facebook, it's not Twitter," Jobs is quick to note -- "it's a social network all about music." And guess what? It has 160 million users in 23 countries built in right away (Apple will presumably be opening it up to other iTunes users later). And it's available on your iPhone and iPod touch -- right in the iTunes Store.

Apple unveiled the new iPod touch today at their special event, along with several other music- and media-related devices. Of course, we've been hearing murmurs and leaks about it for some time now, and the new device pretty much tallies with our expectations. The two big improvements are the Retina screen and the dual cameras. Steve called it the "iPhone without a contract." How candid!

The new Apple TV for $99

Steve Jobs just pulled out the world famous "one more thing" for nothing other than... a new Apple TV. It's now a streaming-focused device (as we predicted months ago) in a small matte black enclosure we're calling "the hockey puck." It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse. Inside there ain't much -- there's no local storage, which makes this thing an entirely different beast than old Apple TVs. Those new streaming HD TV rentals from ABC and Fox will be a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will be a less thrilling $4.99. Other services include Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, and Mobile Me, along with Rotten Tomatoes integration in the movie catalog. You can also stream from your computer, if you miss those old hard drive-sourced days of yore, but iOS 4.2's AirPlay also enables streaming from an iPad straight to an Apple TV. The best news? Apple will start shipping this sucker four weeks from now for $99. Developing...

Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network

Not a huge surprise here, but Apple's just announced iTunes 10 alongside all those new iPods, complete with a brand new logo that finally ditches the CD. What is something of a surprise, however, is the standout feature of iTunes 10: Ping. That's Apple's take on a music-centered social network (think Last.fm), which will let you follow people (including artists), establish a "circle of friends," post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and even find over 17,000 concert listings (which you can of course let folks know your attending). What's more, Ping is also making the jump to the iPhone and iPod touch, and it's available with iTunes 10 today.

iPod touch gets revamped: retina display, FaceTime, HD video recording

Current iPod touch wasn't thin enough for you? Look no further than... well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its "iPhone without the phone" to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it's also got a rear cam capable of HD video -- but you'll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows). Ships next week, pre-orders start today.

Apple claims 50 percent of portable gaming market, iPod touch 'outsells Nintendo and Sony combined'

Nintendo famously called Apple the enemy of the future in the video gaming space, and by golly, it looks like the Japanese giant was right; Steve Jobs just told an audience that the iPod touch alone outsells Nintendo's DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable combined, worldwide. How many games iPod touch users actually play and for how long wasn't discussed, but Jobs said 1.5 billion "games and entertainment" apps have been downloaded -- again, on the iPod touch alone, never mind all those iPhones.

Apple demoes iOS 4.2, features AirPlay media streaming

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple's redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video from your computer to your i-device over WiFi. Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it's certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.
